General Notes: Husband - William F. Barkley

He was reared in the Ligonier valley of Pennsylvania and educated in the public schools. He took a preparatory course for the profession of teaching, which he entered upon at the early age of seventeen and practiced for two years. He then entered the service of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company, and for five years was employed in a clerical capacity. After spending several years in mercantile business for himself at Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, he returned to the above named company by whom he was employed as a clerk for the next ten years. At the end of that time he purchased a farm which thereafter was his home. It consisted of twenty acres which he devoted to fruit culture, making a specialty of small fruits. He developed several choice varieties of grape, and was a close student of horticulture as a science, his library being well stocked with works on this subject. He was an Independent in politics.
