He was reared on a farm and enjoyed only the limited opportunity of country schools until his 17th year, when he was permitted to go to a High School at Clarksville, Missouri. Afterwards (in 1869) he began a college career at Glasgow, Missouri, and graduated in 1873. He then taught, save one year, (1875 and 1876) which he spent in Chemistry at Yale College. Beginning in 1886 he occupied the chair of Chemistry and Physics in Central College, Fayette, Missouri. He wrote much prose and verse, and issued in 1900 a volume of verse entitled, "In Many Woods [Moods?]," which was favorably received.
