He was educated in the schools of his native county, and in early life began milling, and with his sister owned the Greenwood or Renfrew mill on the old homestead.
The Renfrew mill was a saw and grist-mill, ran four stone, two buhrs and two hoppers; capacity 250 bushels, and supplied the market and also provided for home consumption. The brand was "Greenwood Mills."
