He came from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 1790 and first settled near Scottdale, Westmoreland County, on the Fayette County side.

He followed in the footsteps of his father, having been a Mennonite preacher, and like him was well beloved by his fold, and a man of great influence in the community in which he lived.
