He was born in South Huntingdon township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and was but six months old when his parents moved to Sewickley township, where he was educated in the common schools. After his marriage he settled on a farm, an estate consisting of eighty-two acres which was purchased for him by his father. In 1900 he bought one hundred and seventy-five acres of the Carnahan estate, which adjoined his own, thus enlarging his farm to a total of two hundred and fifty-seven acres. He maintained the political tradition of his family by adhering to the Republican party, and was a member of the Dick United Presbyterian Church.
