In early life he was a pioneer fisher, hunter and farmer, and for a number of years he was in the employ of the government as a surveyor. He entered a tract of one hundred and sixty acres of government land, near Mahoning Creek, in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, and there was engaged in farming operations during the greater portion of his lifetime.
