General Notes: Husband - Henry Null

He came with his mother, a Beauchamp and of French descent, from North Carolina, settling on a farm iin Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

He was one of three siblings who remained in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, located at "McKeans Old Stand" in East Huntingdon township. He married and they had seven sons and two daughters, all reared at McKeans Old Stand (Ruffsdale), each child having a farm given him by his father. Henry Null began life's activities as a farmer. He became promoter of many large business enterprises and was a large contractor, constructing portions of the old Pennsylvania canal in Indiana County. He, with his sons, built several miles of the National Pike road, and also helped construct the Washington and Bedford Pike of which he became a charter member and for many years a director of the middle division. He procured the charter for the Cross Pike, connecting the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Pike with the Washington and Bedford Pike of which he built some portions. He was also the man who procured the charter for the Slack-Water navigation along the Youghiogheny river. He finally located at Ruffsdale, then called "McKeans Old Stand" and established a postoffice there. He owned some one thousand five hundred acres of land, as the fruits of his unceasing energy and toil, coupled with his business sagacity. He never sought publicity, but was made the candidate for the Pennsylvania Assembly in 1882, and sent as a delegate to the Harrisburg Convention which nominated General William Henry Harrison for president in 1836. His manhood was such that even those who differed greatly from him were ever ready to admit his fair-mindedness and generosity. In religion he was a pronounced Presbyterian, as was his wife. When he died, he left a wife, six sons and two daughters. [HWC 1906 II, 20]

All of his children with one exception (Philip) inherited and occupied portions of his large landed estate.
He was a Lutheran. [HWC 1906 II, 258]

He settled in East Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, when nineteen years of age, locating near Peter Pool's farm, which later became Ruffsdale. He was a farmer, but later became a contractor and founder of various enterprises. His first contract was for a section of the Pennsylvania canal in Indiana County, and later he built other sections. He built two and a half miles of pike east of Williamsport, later Monongahela City, Pennsylvania, for the Washington & Williamsport Turnpike Company, and completed the road to Washington. He built other sections of the National Pike; built the Washington & Bedford Pike, of which he was one of the organizers and charter members; was for years a director of the Middle Division of that highway; secured a charter for a cross-pike to connect the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Pike with the Washington & Bedford Pike and built a portion of that road; secured a charter for a road from "McKean's Old Stand," near Ruffsdale, to Circleville, then known as Larimer, a distance of thirteen miles, building most of that road himself. In 1836 he, in company with Samuel Pool and others, petitioned to the Legislature to have survey made for a railroad from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, via Chambersburg. He also aided in procuring the first charter for slack land, and was very active in business and public life. After permanently locating at "McKean's Old 'Stand," in East Huntingdon Township, he established, in 1828, a post office by that name. He was candidate for the State Assembly in 1822 and 1829, and delegate to the convention which named General William Henry Harrison for President.
Both he and his wife were members of the Lutheran Church. He was an old-line Whig and Abolitionist.
