He read medicine with his brother, Robert J. Tomb, M.D. He graduated at the Western Reserve Medical College, of Cleveland, Ohio, in 1867. He began the practice in 1860, in Chess Springs, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. In 1863 he located in Armagh, Indiana County, and there remained till his removal in 1867 to Mechanicsburg.
