He was educated in his native city, and early in life embarked in the oil-producing industry, in which his sagacity, reliability, practical knowledge and study of the oil-rocks caused him to be regarded as high authority on the production of oil and natural gas, and placed him second to none among successful producers. He was engaged in the production of oil and gas in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia, and in the manufacturing business at Jamestown, New York, where he resides.
