He was born in Ireland and was one of two sons of his father who emigrated to the United States. He visited his brother Thomas' family in "Culbertson's Row", Franklin County, Pennsylvania, after the death of Thomas, and subsequently lived at Cunningham's Cross Roads, Maryland, and finally settled in Berkeley county, West Virginia.
