Of Puritan stock, the original ancestor of the Orvis family was among the emigrants in the second vessel that landed on the shores of New England in 1653. The family subsequently removed to Connecticut.

Many years before the Revolution, he removed from Connecticut to the state of New York. Several of his sons served in the armies of the United States in the Revolutionary War.
