He was educated at Marion College, Missouri. For many years he was engaged in steamboating and merchandising, and was also general superintendent of the American Iron-works store. Beginning in 1865 he was engaged in book-keeping.
He was a leading man in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, having held many prominent positions, and served as auditor of Scott township nine years. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity and was a democrat.
