He was reared on a farm and obtained his education in the old subscription schools. He was trained to farming which he always followed as an occupation. His farm consisted of one hundred and thirty acres of choice land and was situated two miles from Robbins' station and three and one-half miles southwest of Irwin, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
He was a Republican in politics and attended the United Presbyterian church. He served his township as school director.
