He was born on the old family homestead farm in Mount Pleasant township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and remained at home with his father until he attained twenty-one years of age. His father then purchased a farm for him in East Huntingdon township, where he spent the remainder of his life, giving his entire attention to farming. He was a member of the Lutheran church.
