He inherited from his father a farm in Lost Creek Valley "adjoining the Hugh McAlister property called 'Hugh's Fancy.'" He served in the War of 1812, and was at the Black Rock encampment during that war. He carried on business at Newton Hamilton and Hollidaysburg.
