He graduated from William Jewell College with a major in Economics. He worked first for Collins Radio before starting with the First National Bank of Kansas City, MO. He became Vice-President of the bank in 1972 and managed the Loan Review De­partment, which he established in 1980. He attended the Graduate School of Banking at the Uni­versity of Wisconsin.
