He was a lineal descendant of Sir Edward Rawson, who lived in the reign of one of the Henrys, kings of England, and was a man of military skill and experience.
He came to America in 1637, settling in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. He was secretary of the colony from 1651 to 1686.
