General Notes: Husband - Frederick Pershing

He was born in Alsace, Germany, near the river Rhine. His parents being poor, and having acquired the arts of weaving coverlids and making saltpetre, he migrated to Baltimore, Maryland, leaving home in May, 1744, and arriving after a voyage of three months. Having no money to pay his passage he worked on the vessel and for a party on shore till he had "redeemed" his passage. He then began to work at his trades, and in time acquired sufficient capital to purchase a small farm in Frederick County, Maryland. He had married in the meantime. In 1773, he sold this farm and came to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he purchased a tract of land situated on Nine Mile run, about four miles southwest of what is now Youngstown. In 1774, with several of his older boys, he left Maryland to make an "opening" on his land, and in 1775 he removed with his family to his new home in the woods. He died on this tract, about sixty-eight years of age, leaving a widow who survived him thirty years. Their remains are lying in Smith's grave yard, near Pleasant Unity. He was a strict Lutheran and raised his family in the same faith.

The Pershing family was founded in America by one Frederick Pershing (Pfoersching) of noted French Huguenot lineage, who came to America from Alsace-Lorraine on the good ship "Jacob," landing at the port of Philadelphia, October 2, 1749. He settled, first, north of Frederick, Maryland, which was then the frontier of the Southern Colonies. In 1768 Frederick Pershing removed to Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, locating along Nine-Mile Run, in Unity Township, near the later site of Youngstown, where he and his sons built "Coventry" upon his land.
