General Notes: Husband - James Rankin Martin

He received his education in the district schools, Darlington Academy and Westminster College. He remained on the farm until 1876, when he was appointed deputy sheriff under his father, and served in that capacity three years. In 1879 he began to read law with Agnew & Buchanan, and was admitted to the bar Feb. 6, 1882. In 1883 he was elected district attorney, and was re-elected in 1886.
He and his wife were members of the United Presbyterian church; in politics he was a Republican.

After attending the public schools and Darlington Academy, Mr. Martin matriculated at Westminster College, New Wilmington. He read law in the office of Agnew & Buchanan, in Beaver. In 1882 he was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar, and commenced to practice at Beaver Falls, forming a partnership under the firm name of Thomson & Martin. Twelve years later, when Mr. Thomson removed to Pittsburgh, Mr. Martin continued to practice alone, until 1910. At that time he formed a new partnership with Mr. Swaney, and the firm became Martin & Swaney, under which name they carried on a general law practice, with offices in the Federal Title and Trust Building.
The Farmers' National Bank of Beaver Falls was one of the oldest and largest banks in Beaver County. Going back to the beginning of its history, we find that Mr. Martin, who later became its president, was one of the founders and organizers of this financial institution. He was also a director of the Beaver Trust Company. He aided in the organization of many other industrial concerns. He was president of the Grand View Cemetery Association, director and vice-president of the White Clay Mining Company, director of the Ingram & Richardson Company, the Citizens' National Bank of Monaca, and the Lisbon & Ohio Railroad. Mr. Martin was a staunch Republican, and on the ticket of this party he was twice placed in the office of district attorney. He was a member of the Beaver Falls Chamber of Commerce, and was fraternally affiliated with the Beaver Falls Lodge, No. 478, Free and Accepted Masons, Beaver Falls Chapter, Royal Arch Masons; Beaver Falls Commandery, Knights Templar; the Valley of New Castle Consistory, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite; and Syria Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, of Pittsburgh. He also belonged to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Knights of Pythias, and the Royal Arcanum. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church. [PAH, 106]
