General Notes: Husband - Col. Charles Pettit


The Pettit family is of Huguenot origin, and numbers among its members many who have been prominent in the state and nation, and also, through marriage into other celebrated families is identified with the history of the country.
Other branches of the Pettit family were well known in Connecticut and New York state, and many of their descendants have been prominent in different sections of the country.

He was a patriot, a revolutionary statesman, and a member of the continental congress from 1785 to 1787. He was a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania, a member of the American Philosophical Society, and president of the Insurance Company of North America, the oldest insurance company in the United States.
