General Notes: Husband - [Ancestor] Platt

While this name is possibly of Germanic origin the country of its immediate derivation is England. The meaning is said to be “an open, level piece of ground.” This surname is found in various parts of England, and in that country coats-of-arms have been granted to persons of the Platt name. Of the American Platts the major part are descended from Richard Platt, who came to America in 1638, and landed at New Haven. In the following year he was one of the first settlers at Milford, then New Haven, but now Connecticut. At that time he had four in his family. Orville Hitchcock Platt, United States senator from Connecticut, and in his time one of the leaders of the United States senate, was one of his descendants. Probably Senator Platt of New York state was also descended from Richard, mentioned above. The family is widely spread and it is not impossible that the present family is descended from this immigrant. 2
