He was educated at Tuscarora Academy, and was graduated at Lafayette College in 1861. After leaving college he served nine months in Company H, 126th. P. V. I. He entered the Princeton Theological Seminary, and was graduated in 1866. He was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Carlisle, and served congregations at Harrisburg, 1866-67; at McConnellsburg, Green Hill and Wells Valley, 1868-71; at Newton, Hamilton and Mount Union, 1871-78, and Shirleysburg, 1878.
