General Notes: Husband - Jacob Barnhart, Jr.

Six families of Barnharts came to Butler County, PA, in about 1796. They settled in what now constitutes Fairview Township, originally a part of Donegal. They did not bring their families on the first trip, but erected cabins on their several selections of land, and commenced the laborious task of clearing small spots of ground for cultivation.

He moved in an early day from Westmoreland County, PA, to Butler County, where he took up a large tract of land, owning about 250 acres. He improved his property, developing a beautiful farm, and was known as one of the progressive men of his day, both for the enterprise he displayed in his business affairs and his usefulness as a citizen. Besides farming he followed shoemaking, receiving forty cents a day for work at his trade. On his farm Jacob Barnhart passed the remainder of his life, dying when fifty-six years old, and he is buried in an old cemetery in Fairview township, Butler County. He and his wife were members of the German Reformed Church.
