He was reared and educated in Cross Creek township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and passed his early life in farming. In 1882 he came to Burgettstown and formed a partnership with S. C. McGregor, in the general merchandise business, and came to have the largest stock of goods in the town, realizing a good profit from the daily sales. In politics he was always an active Republican. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and one of its most liberal supporters.
