He graduated from Butler High School, Butler, Pennsylvania, in 1900, from Washington and Jefferson College in 1904, and from the Medical College of the University of Pennsylvania in 1908. He then spent a year as interne at Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh, and then returned to Butler, where he then engaged in the practice of his profession.
Doctor Purvis was a member of the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania State Medical Society, and the Butler County Medical Society, past president. He was affiliated with Butler Lodge No. 272, F. and A. M., and was also a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Sterling Club, and the Butler Country Club. His fraternities were: Phi Gamma Delta, Alpha Mu Pi Omega, and Alpha Omega Alpha.
