General Notes: Husband - John P. Shale

He was born in Ligonier township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, at what later became Idlewild Park. He had the advantage of an excellent common school education, and his early years were spent on the Ligonier farm. Later he removed to McKeesport, Pennsylvania, where he and his brother Jacob opened and conducted a general store for four years, under the firm name of Shale Brothers. After his marriage he removed to Cook township, where he bought a farm of one hundred and sixteen acres, which he cultivated and on which he resided. He owned a considerable amount of other property, and was extensively engaged in the business of buying and selling stock. He was a member of the German Reformed church (Beulah), of which he was an elder for some time. Politically he was a Democrat, but had no time to spare for public office.
