General Notes: Husband - John Read

He was settled in Maryland at least ten years prior to his son Alexander's birth. The earliest of a number of deeds on record, conveying land to this John Read, is dated June 5, 1742. (Liber 6/168). It is probable that he migrated from northern Ireland shortly prior to the latter date, which is also the approximate date of his marriage to Eleanor Ross. The possibility that he and his wife were both born in America is not to be disregarded however.
Both the Read and Ross families originated in lowland Scotland and were among those transplanted to Ulster in Ireland after the accession of James I of England, and they likewise formed later a part of the mass migration to America. County Armagh has been assigned as the locale of these Reads in Ireland.

His will, dated October 2, 1793, indicates his weak physical condition at the time. It was probated March 6, 1794 (Libor EE-5/334). Except for the bequest of a negro boy to his grandson, John R., son of Alexander and provision for the manumission of two other slaves, Alexander
Read is made sole beneficiary and named executor. Evidently, the testator's wife, Alexander's mother, had predeceased him.
