General Notes: Husband - Joseph C. Riesenman, Sr.

He was reared and educated in his native town, and, after completing the usual curriculum of an English education, took a special classical course under a private tutor. He learned the drug business in Butler, Pennsylvania, and in 1872 came to Petroleum Center, where he took charge of a drug store. In December, 1873, he located in Franklin, purchasing an interest in the drug house of Miller & Company. In October, 1874, he bought the remaining interest, and carried on the largest and most prominent drug store in the city.
The family were practical Catholics, and he was a member of the C. M. B. A., C. K. of A., and C. B. L. societies, all affiliating with the Catholic church. He was a Democrat in politics, but took very little interest in political matters. In 1880 he began successfully operating and dealing in both heavy and light oils, and he was a member of the Oil City Oil Exchange beginning in June, 1884.

He was born in Butler, Pennsylvania, where he attended and graduated from the public and parochial schools. He learned pharmacy with Dr. J. C. Redick, of Butler, through the old method, working at its various branches until the calling was mastered and experience gained. In 1871 he removed to Petroleum Center, where he was given the management of a store owned by Dr. Louis H. Christie; and removing to Franklin in 1873, he consolidated with the James H. Christie store, at No. 1266 Liberty Street, purchasing an interest in the establishment. In 1874 he bought out his partners, and continued until 1908, when he turned his attention to paint manufacturing. In 1895, with a number of others, he organized the Riesenman Manufacturing Company; in 1902 he acquired sole control by purchase of his associates' interests. The company produced paint specialties for the steel and iron trade, oil and gas companies, as well as a general line of paints. He was also vice-president of the Seep & Riesenman Realty Company. His political associations were with the Republican Party.
Fraternally, Mr. Riesenman was affiliated with Duquesne Council, Knights of Columbus, in Pittsburgh, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in Franklin; and he was a member of the Franklin Club, and of the Catholic Club, of New York City. He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, of Franklin.
