General Notes: Husband - Hans Ulrich Sphar

He, along with his siblings, Mattern, Henry, Walter and Rebecca, made a journey westward to look for land in about 1780 near where his brother John had settled. Indians attacked the party near Scenery Hill, which was about 40 miles north of Short Creek, Virginia, (north of Wheeling), and two people were killed. Reports are conflicting as to the names; however, Walter and Mattern, and his wife, Mary, disappear from the records.

He moved to Opequon Creek with the family in 1760. He later married and settled on Short Creek near Wheeling, West Virginia, where he built a cabin. He was an avowed Tory, and during the Revolution War he disappeared until the war was over. What he did during those years went to his deathbed with him.
