His great-grandfather, Samuel Renfrew, was a native of Glasgow, Scotland, came to America and settled in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, on a place still owned by his descendants generations later. He was a farmer and also a miller.
His father was a very wealthy man and owned several farms, with which he provided his children.
