General Notes: Husband - William Reynolds

He was a native of Yorkshire, England. [HVC 1890, 1150]

He emigrated to America in 1794, landing in New York City, remained there until 1797, then came to Venango County, Pennsylvania, and settled a tract of land where Cherrytree village would later be located. He being the only settler between Franklin and Titusville, travelers would make his home their stopping place when traveling from Pittsburgh to Erie. When Mr. Reynolds came to Venango County he brought his son John, a lad of sixteen years of age, with him. They came in August of 1797, and commenced their improvements. Leaving his son John on the improvements made, he returned to New York City the following fall to bring his family to his new home. But it was not until in the spring of 1798 that he reached his new home with his family.

An Englishman by birth, he came to America with his son John and upon their arrival at New York they were promptly met by land agents, among whom were the representatives of the Holland Company. The representations of the latter induced them to make a journey to northwestern Pennsylvania. Here they secured a four hundred acre tract on Cherry Tree run, embracing the site of the village and church of that name. This was in 1797. In the following year the father went to Philadelphia to meet the rest of his family and conduct them to their new home west of the Allegheny mountains. They are remembered as people of worth and respectability. The father was a Baptist in faith but extended his hospitality to the ministers of all denominations. In politics he was Democratic. [HVC 1890, 587]

The Reynolds family in England was com-posed of strict Church of England people, but William Reynolds, when a young man, united with the Baptist denomination, and the immediate cause of the immigration of William to America was his sympathy with the French Republican movement of that period, having been a sufferer by the sacking of his house and destruction of his property during the progress of what was known as the Birmingham riots, he having before that time removed to that city. [HCC 1885, 760]

He and his wife had seven daughters and four sons.
