General Notes: Husband - Joseph Smith

His father was a business man of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and in 1798 purchased twenty-two or twenty-three hundred acres of land in Huntingdon township, Westmoreland County. The father send his son, Joseph, to Huntingdon township to look after the property there. He was accompanied by his father-in-law, Henry Rhodes, and his family.
On the land was an old log house which had been built by Colonel Hays, of the colonial legislature, and it became one of the oldest houses in the county, being still in a fair state of preservation into the twentieth century.
In 1801 or 1802 Mr. Smith built a grist-mill, which was a landmark for many years, being constructed of stone. In 1833 he was appointed by Governor George Wolf, justice of the peace, and while he was never a seeker for political preferment, he was prominent in local politics.
