He went to college at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, but left college and entered the service of the United States in the Fifty-third Pennsylvania. After his discharge he returned to Gettysburg, and graduated there in 1868, entered Albany Law-School, where he graduated in 1869, after which he taught Pine Grove Academy for five years, after which he emigrated with his family to Granite Falls, Minnesota.
