He was a farmer and carpenter, noted for his vigor of body and mind.

On the night of Jan. 16, 1857, the home in which Joseph Young and family lived was burned, and the family suffered great hardship, both on that night and during the rest of the winter. It was the coldest night for many years, and the nearest neighbor living over a mile away, all the members of the family were badly frozen. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Young were hardy pioneers of that early day.
