"Joe came to Rockland township with his father in 1851. When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted at Emlenton in Company L, Fourth Cavalry, Sixty-fourth Regiment. He was not old enough to be drafted, but insisted on going. When his step-mother tried to talk him out of it, he said he could stop a bullet as well as anyone else. During the war, he had two horses shot out from under him but was not hurt.

"When he came back to Rockland after the war he took up carpentry. When he died he was engaged to marry Mary Rena McMillan, a neighbor girl." (14)
