He grew to manhood in the old log house on the home farm on which he always lived. He was associated with his brother, Hugh C., in farming and stock raising.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and in boyhood was accustomed to ride on horseback to Pigeon Creek to attend services. He was a Republican in political sentiment.
