General Notes: Husband - George Frederick Ziegler


He received his preparatory education in the local schools and from private tutors. He entered Amherst College in 1862. and was graduated in 1866. At Amherst he was a member of the Alexandria Literary Society and the Psi Epsilon Fraternity. His studies were interrupted by his enlistment in Company K, 126th P. V. I., Aug. 7, 1862. He was promoted to Sergeant-Major Aug. 18, 1862, and served with his regiment until it was mustered out, May 20, 1863, participating in the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. After leaving the service he at once resumed his studies. In 1866 he entered the Princeton Theological Seminary, and was graduated in 1869, after which he spent two years in England and on the Continent. He was a student of the Universities of Berlin and Heidelberg. Returning to Greencastle in 1872, he opened a select school, which he conducted with success until 1886, when he was elected Professor of English Literature and French at Wilson College, at Chambersburg. He resigned his professorship in 1888, and resumed his residence at Greencastle, where he devoted himself to the large business interests of his father. He served as president of the Waynesboro, Greencastle & Mercersburg Turnpike Company, and as president of the Enoch Brown Park Association, in the formation of which his father was one of the active spirits. In the spring of 1903 he was elected a director of the First National Bank of Greencastle. He gave most of his time to the management of his farms in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and Washington County, Maryland. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church of Greencastle. In politics he was affiliated with the Republican party.

She attended the public schools in Baltimore, Maryland, and in 1885 was graduated from the Eastern Female High School. In 1886 she studied at Bryn Mawr Preparatory School, Baltimore, for admission to Wilson College, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, entering the latter college in 1887, and graduating therefrom in 1889. For one year she taught in the Kindergarten School of Miss Laura Beatty, in Baltimore, and the following year in the private schools of Mrs. Adams and the Misses Bond, Baltimore. Subsequently she taught in Nottingham seminary, Cecil County, Maryland, and in 1892 was appointed instructor in Latin in Wilson College; in 1897 she was elected Adjunct Professor in Latin in the same college, but after two years resigned. From 1893 to 1903 she served as president of the Alumnae Association of Wilson College.
