General Notes: Husband - Courtney Sampson Sanford

He attended the schools of Frenchcreek Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania, and assisted on the farm. He enlisted in Company F, 16th Regt, N.G.P., the military organization stationed at Franklin, and was promoted through the non-com line to the office of Sergeant. He was called to active duty with that organization several times. He and Ed Brosang of Sugarcreek, purchased a steam threshing machine and for several seasons did practically all of that work in the community. Later he installed a shingle mill at the home place and still later a cider and jelly mill. Following this he began to engage in oil well drilling. He purchased drilling equipment and continued in that business for some time. His next venture was a coal and food business in Franklin and some time later farm machinery was added. While engaged in construction work in Butler, Pennsylvania, he met Mary Roenig and in 1895, they were united in marriage. They were members of the Lutheran Church in Franklin.
