He was a native of Hershfield [Herchfeldt?], Germany, and with his three brothers came to the United States and settled in Ohio. He later moved to Butler, Pennsylvania, where he was a prominent merchant in business life covering a period of forty years.

He died at the age of seventy-three.

He and his wife were the parents of six sons and three daughters.
