He was a soldier in the Civil War.

He and his youngest sister, Julia, lived on the old farm at Elder's Ridge for a number of years after their father's and mother's death, and then sold the homestead to a coal company and purchased a small farm in the suburbs of Indiana, Pennsylvania.
