He was a farmer and sold meat and produce to his customers in Franklin. At the request of the Franklin civic leaders, he contacted farmers throughout the area to set up a curb market and he was the first farmer to set up a curb market on 12th Street. A group of thirteen from the market later moved into a building on 12th Street which was later converted into Welton's Meat and Grocery Market.
