General Notes: Husband - Simon Somers

He was a native of Hesse-Darmstadt, which he left at the age of nineteen years, about the time of the political troubles of 1848, to come to America in search of greater industrial and political freedom. He accompanied an aunt, Mrs. Anna Eymer, who settled in Mount Pleasant township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, her nephew taking up his abode there also. Here he worked as a farm hand, whereat he met with sufficient success for him, shortly afterwards, to marry Barbara Bash, a daughter of Martin Bash, an old and highly respected inhabitant, who for many years resided on a part of the farm later owned by Simon B. Somers. This farm was later purchased by Mr. Somers, Sr., from Mr. Bash, and he and his wife lived there. His wife died, he married again and brought his second wife to live on the farm which he had purchased and which consisted of some eighty-five or eighty-six acres, and there they continued to reside up to the time of their deaths. The last eighteen years of Mrs. Somers life were spent largely in the village of Pleasant Unity nearby. Mr. Somers, Sr., while a prominent man in the community, never held public office of any kind. He attended the Lutheran church, known as the Hill or Ridge Church, which was situated about one mile distant from his farm in Mount Pleasant township.
