He received his education in the public schools of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, from which he graduated in 1885, and in the Pennsylvania State College, where he took a course in agriculture in 1896. He served as clerk with his father in the ice business for about six months. In the spring of 1886 he moved to the old Rutherford homestead, which was in possession of the family for over one hundred and forty years, and where he lived a retired life. He had a large interest in the Rutherford Ice Company, of Harrisburg. For some time he traveled in the south for the purpose of securing a suitable location for engaging in farming. He was a staunch Republican in politics.
