He acquired his first school training in the district school of the neighborhood. After doing his share of the work of the farm when a young boy he started at the age of nineteen years to work for himself. He first engaged in lumbering and worked at that for five years. He later lived on his own farm of seventy-six acres in Porter township. In political preferences he was a Democrat. His wife was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.
