He was a vaudeville performer; he met his wife while he was in Franklin, PA, to play with "The Four Dancing Lubins" at the Opera House. For a number of years she traveled with the vaudeville troupe which he headed and she helped with work backstage. After he left show business, they spent a year in New Mexico where they had a ranch. Then in Wheeling, West Virginia, they operated a theatrical hotel. In 1917, they returned to Franklin to live. For twenty-five years they operated the Salsburg greenhouse at Sugarcreek, near Franklin, and it was known familiarly as "Doll House Gardens."
