When a young man, he took quite an extensive reconnoitering tour of two or three years, in the western country, visiting Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, etc. Later he was engaged in railroading under the jurisdiction of his brother Eben, at Salem, Missouri, on the St. Louis, Salem and Little Rock railroad.
