General Notes: Husband - Durs Schaeublin

He and his wife were from the Basel area of Switzerland; however, they lived in the Waldenberg District, which is about 30 miles south of Basel near Olten. Waldenberg is a village located in an enclosed valley that serves as one of the major routes north to Basel. It dates back to the 1200s, and was the location of a major castle, which provided protection long this route. A number of villages developed around it that supported the needs of the lord of the castle. The Shively family and the others related to it appear to have been part of this support to the lord. The castle was burned in the political wars of the 1790s, which was after they left for America. However, the area was subjected to religious turmoil for many years before the castle was destroyed.
