He was a minister of the Lutheran Church, a graduate from Muhlenburg College, Allentown, in 1872. He was also graduated from the Lutheran Theological Seminary of Philadelphia in 1875. In 1872 he took the degree of A. B., and in 1875 received the degree of M. A. For nine years he was a missionary in Nova Scotia, and later was a missionary pastor in Allentown, PA.
