His mother died in childbirth with him. His maternal grandmother, Anna Mertz (Mrs. Casper Engelhart) got the young baby and 'gave' him to her son George J. Engelhart and his wife Kate Schields, who adopted him. His name was then Edward Schmalzle Engelhart.
