He first moved from Heidelberg Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, to the Salem-Kantz area of present-day Snyder County. In 1825, he, with brother-in-law Andrew Weaver and sister Catharine moved west on the Old State Road from Haines Township, Centre County. They continued on to Pine Run Valley in Richland Township, Venango County, a trip of about 150 miles.
